Sotheby's Monaco : Auction house
The famous auction house appraised remotely.
Sotheby's auction house was founded on 11 March 1744 in London when Samuel Baker, a bookseller, auctioned off several hundred precious books.
In 1767, he formed a partnership with George Leigh, a British businessman, to develop his company specialising in the sale of books and manuscripts.
When Baker died in 1778, his estate was divided between Leigh and Baker's nephew, John Sotheby.
Over the years, the company took on various names, including Baker and Leigh and Leigh and Sotheby's. It was not until 1983 that the name was finally changed to Sotheby's. Today it is the world's oldest and largest auction house.
Of British origin, the firm is present in 40 countries around the world, including a gallery in Monaco since 1967.
Sotheby's Monaco organises numerous events. From 5 December 2023 to 16 February 2024, there will be an exhibition and sale on the theme of "Contemporary Colours". Discover the works of Tom Wesselmann, Peter Halley and Antoni Tàpies.
Sotheby's Monaco also offers online appraisals of works of art, furniture, paintings, watches and wines, conducted by Mark Armstrong. Jewellery is appraised by Douglas Walter, a jewellery specialist.
